DE LA Dance Company opens its 17th season with Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic horror novel
Condensed Synopsis of Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus
Act I introduces Victor Frankenstein's early life in Geneva, marked by familial love and his obsession with scientific discovery. At university, Victor's ambitions lead him to create life, resulting in the birth of the Creature. Horrified by his creation, Victor abandons it, setting the stage for the Creature's journey of isolation and despair.
Act II follows the Creature's struggle for survival and desire for companionship. It witnesses the happiness of others but is continually rejected and misunderstood, leading to accidental violence. The wrongful execution of Justine for the Creature's crimes further propels Victor into a spiral of guilt and grief. In a moment of confrontation, the Creature demands a companion, and Victor reluctantly agrees.
Act III begins with Victor and Elizabeth’s wedding, shadowed by the Creature's presence. The honeymoon turns tragic when the Creature kills Elizabeth in a fit of rage. Devastated, Victor pursues the Creature to the ends of the earth, driven by revenge. In the final moments, Victor dies in the Creature's arms, leaving a haunting reflection on the consequences of unchecked ambition and the tragedy of creating life without responsibility.
